Thomas Walker is a Manager of Computer Systems and User Services in the School of Engineering. Initially, he joined Toastmasters to meet others outside of engineering.
Thomas decided to be Sergeant at Arms because he did not want to just show up, he wanted to contribute. His biggest challenge this year as Sergeant at Arms was in getting to meetings. Sometimes work conflicted with the meeting schedule.
Thomas feels that the next Sergeant at Arms needs to have personality, commitment, and availability. Here’s what it involves:
Making sure the room is available
Setting up and arranging meeting location
Bringing the banner, mallet, nametags, timing box, and other supplies
Ensuring that no one enters the room when someone is speaking
If money were no object, Thomas would spend his days exercising and hanging out with the elders. If Thomas were not working in his current job, he would probably be remodeling homes or looking at how to get into the voiceover industry. Thomas has an amazingly deep and silky voice.
The celebrity that Thomas feels would be the best Sergeant at Arms in an all-celebrity Toastmasters chapter is Michael Clark Duncan (The Green Mile).
This is part of the We Want You! Series, which profiled each of our charter club officers before they handed over the reins to the new team on July 1.
